The World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold crossed the Atlantic on Sunday. After Boston and New York, the INIT Indoor Meeting in Karlsruhe was the first of the European stops, in the Europahalle.

The distance races were the meeting's heart. Georgia Hunter Bell of Britain won the women's 1500 m in 4:00.04, with Ethiopia's Birke Haylom second. Azeddine Habz of France took the men's 1500 m in 3:33.36. Stefan Nillessen of the Netherlands won the men's 3000 m in 7:38.48 and Canada's Gabriela Debues-Stafford the women's in 8:35.94. Alexander Stepanov of Germany won the 800 m in 1:46.17.

In the sprints, Cameroon's Emmanuel Eseme took the 60 m in 6.53 from Ali Al Balushi of Oman, 6.54, and Owen Ansah of Germany, 6.55. Bassant Hemida of Egypt ran the fastest of three women's 400 m finals in 51.97, and Grace Stark of the United States won the 60 m hurdles in 7.86.

Yaroslava Mahuchikh cleared 2.01 m in the high jump. Larissa Iapichino's 6.84 m long jump went a long way to winning her the overall tour title, and Sondre Guttormsen's 5.84 m pole vault did the same for him; both would win again at the final in Toruń.

The Gold series is eight meetings in a month. Indoor running's best month of the year is now under way.
