Cole Hocker runs 3:45.94, the second fastest indoor mile ever, in Winston-Salem
At the first ASICS Sound Running Invite, Hocker took the American indoor mile and 1500 m records; Cooper Lutkenhaus ran a world under-20 800 m record.

The first ASICS Sound Running Invite at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on Saturday gave him a 200 m track and a clear run, and he ran 3:45.94, the second fastest indoor mile in history. Only one man has ever run faster indoors.
The splits: 56.77 at the quarter, 1:54.24 at the half, 2:51.12 at three-quarters, then a 54.82 last quarter. He won by more than four seconds. On the way he passed 1500 m in 3:30.80, the third fastest indoor 1500 m ever. Both marks are American indoor records, subject to the USATF records committee. The mile replaces the 3:46.63 Yared Nuguse ran at Millrose a year ago, briefly a world record. USATF named Hocker its Athlete of the Week.
The 800 m went to Cooper Lutkenhaus, the Texas high schooler, in 1:44.03, a world under-20 indoor record and the second fastest indoor 800 m by any American. Nico Young, fourth in the Wanamaker Mile two weeks earlier, won the 3000 m in 7:33.32.
Hocker is the Olympic 1500 m champion and the world 5000 m champion. In February 2026 he won a two mile, a mile and, two weeks later, a national 3000 m title, in three different rooms. Range is the rarest thing in middle distance running, and he has more of it than anyone.
