Yemaneberhan Crippa wins the Paris Marathon; Shure Demise sets a 2:18:34 course record

Italy's Crippa broke clear at 39 km to win in 2:05:18; Demise took more than a minute off the women's record and the top four all beat it.

Yemaneberhan Crippa won the 49th Paris Marathon on Sunday in 2:05:18, a personal best and his first big marathon win. The men's race stayed packed for a long time: as many as 18 runners were within five seconds of the lead at halfway, passed in a little over 1:03, and about ten were still there under the Eiffel Tower. Crippa attacked at 39 km on a climb and descent in the 16th arrondissement, and only Ethiopia's Bayelign Teshager stayed close. Teshager was second in 2:05:23 and Kenya's Sila Kiptoo third in 2:05:28; the top six finished within 40 seconds.

Crippa, 29, is the 2022 European 10,000 m champion and the 2024 European half marathon champion, and had finished 25th in the Olympic marathon on these streets two years ago. France's Emmanuel Roudolff-Levisse was sixth in 2:05:58 on his Paris debut, the fourth-fastest marathon by a Frenchman.

Shure Demise of Ethiopia won the women's race in 2:18:34, a course record by more than a minute over Judith Korir's 2:19:48 from 2022. A lead pack of six passed halfway in 1:09:37 and Demise ran the second half in 1:08:57. Misgane Alemayehu was second in 2:19:08, Magdalyne Masai third in 2:19:17 and Enatnesh Tirusew fourth in 2:19:18. All four were inside the old record.

It was 8 to 11 degrees and overcast, with more than 57,000 finishers behind the elites. Paris got the weather it rarely gets, and the times followed.
