It is a US all-comers record for a road mile and an event record, under the 3:54.55 Vince Ciattei ran to win here last year. The race is part of the Grand Blue Mile, now in its 17th year.
Nuguse and Ciattei, the two-time defending champion, were inseparable from the start: a quarter in just under 59 seconds, halfway in 1:59, three quarters in 3:00. Nuguse, the Olympic 1500 m bronze medallist in Paris and the American record holder in the mile, had the finish. Ciattei was second in 3:54.62, Drew Hunter third in 3:55.29, Waleed Suliman fourth in 3:55.86 and Dylan Jacobs fifth in 3:56.05. Eighteen men started.
Addy Wiley, 22, won the women's race in 4:25.42 from Graci Hyde, 4:25.64, and Gracie Morris, 4:25.75, who repeated her bronze from 2025. Wiley went through the quarter in 65 seconds and halfway in 2:13. She won the USATF indoor 800 m in March and took bronze over 800 m at the World Indoor Championships, and had only run one road mile before, a third place in 2023. Annika Reiss, Eleanor Fulton and Allie Ostrander followed.
The top two men and women earn places on the US team for the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen in September. The purse was a record $50,000, with $10,000 to each champion.
A road mile is four minutes on a city street with no lanes and no lap counter. Nuguse's time would have won most track races this spring.
