The Canyons 100K started at five on Saturday morning at the China Wall trailhead in the Sierra foothills and finished in downtown Auburn, California, on the same trails Western States uses in June. Nearly 700 started the 12th edition, with about 3,750 m of climbing and 5,180 m of descent, and three Western States Golden Tickets for each race.

Adam Peterman took the lead around halfway and kept it, winning in 8:18:47. Behind him a four-man group fought for the last two tickets over the final 15 miles. Zach Miller was second in 8:21:05. Hayden Hawks was 31 seconds behind China's Can-Hua Luo at the Confluence with four miles left, passed him, and took third in 8:23:28. Luo was fourth in 8:25:17 and Canyon Woodward fifth. All three men accepted their tickets.

Careth Arnold went out hard in the women's race and led by nearly five minutes at 17 miles. Riley Brady closed on the Cal Street descent, made the pass on the climb to Driver's Flat at 46 miles and won by nearly 12 minutes at the Confluence, finishing in 9:41:09. Arnold was second in 9:56:36 and declined her ticket to run Hardrock in July; Sarah Allaben was third in 10:14:58 after surging past a three-woman chase pack in the last 10 km, and Sarah Humble, fourth, accepted a ticket.

On Friday the 100-mile went to Noa Ohms of Germany, 17:50:12, and Aroa Sio of Spain, 19:24:34. Matt Daniels and Makena Morley won the 50K, where Molly Seidel was third in 4:07:03.

Canyons is the dress rehearsal. Winning it in April settles nothing about June, and everyone on the start line knows it.
