The 2026 Diamond League started on Saturday 16 May at the China Textile City Sports Center in Shaoxing. Faith Kipyegon had not raced on the track this year. She won the women's 5000 m in 14:24.14, the fastest time in the world so far, and she had to work for it: Likina Amebaw of Ethiopia ran a personal best of 14:24.21, seven hundredths behind, and Senayet Getachew was third in 14:24.71. Ethiopians took the next seven places behind Kipyegon.

Her old 1500 m meeting record went the same night. Birke Haylom came from behind to win in 3:55.56, breaking the mark Kipyegon set here ten years ago. Tsige Duguma, the 800 m runner, was second in 3:55.71 in only her second 1500 m and her first outdoors, and Australia's Abbey Caldwell ran a personal best of 3:56.12 for third. Eleven women finished under four minutes.

The headline field mark of the night belonged to Jessica Schilder, whose 21.09 m in the shot put was a Diamond League record and a Dutch record. Armand Duplantis cleared a meeting record 6.12 m in the pole vault and then missed three times at a world record 6.32 m. Gift Leotlela won the men's 100 m in 9.97 from Ferdinand Omanyala and Kenny Bednarek, both 9.98.

A 14:24 in May, in her first race, by seven hundredths. Kipyegon's season opener is most people's season.
