Ky Robinson wins Commonwealth 10,000 m gold; Isle of Man's Mullarkey takes bronze

Robinson sat through 15 slow laps and wound it up over the last ten to win in 27:48.93 from Gulveer Singh (27:49.78) and Mullarkey (27:50.28).

Ky Robinson of Australia won the men's 10,000 m at the Commonwealth Games on Tuesday night in Glasgow in 27:48.93, a day after Rose Davies won the women's race. The first 15 laps, he said, were "pretty boring". The plan was to pick it up slowly and go hard over the last kilometre, and that is what the race looked like: ten fast laps on top of 15 slow ones, and a last lap he had to hold to the line.

Gulveer Singh of India was second in 27:49.78 and David Mullarkey of the Isle of Man third in 27:50.28, a Commonwealth medal for the Isle of Man. Edwin Kurgat of Kenya was fourth in 27:50.98, a season's best, Scott Beattie of England fifth in 27:54.50 and Daniel Ebenyo sixth in a personal best 27:56.35. Jacob Kiplimo's Games record of 27:09.19 stood. Robinson, who is coached by Dathan Ritzenhein in Boulder, doubles back in the 5000 m on Saturday.

It was a wet night at Scotstoun and a loud one. Emmanuel Eseme of Cameroon won the 100 m in 9.83, a Games record, from Lachlan Kennedy, whose 9.85 is an Oceanian record, and Kanyinsola Ajayi, 9.90. Zoe Hobbs of New Zealand won the women's 100 m in 10.93, also an Oceanian record. Eleanor Patterson equalled the Games record in the high jump at 1.96 m on her final attempt, with Nicola Olyslagers second, and Camryn Rogers threw the hammer 74.91 m, a Games record of her own.

A 10,000 m in the rain with 25 laps to think about it. Robinson spent 15 of them bored and ten of them winning.
