No woman had done that double at the same Games before.
Megan Keith of Scotland led the field into the last two kilometres with Davies and Jessica Hull close behind her. Davies went with 200 m to go, Hull went with her, and Davies took it over the last 30 m, 14:44.53 to 14:45.01. Keith held on for bronze in 14:49.10. Esther Chebet of Uganda ran a personal best 14:50.70 in fourth, Hannah Nuttall of England 14:51.34, Caroline Nyaga of Kenya 14:54.00 and Linden Hall 14:55.28 for seventh. Paula Radcliffe's Games record of 14:31.40 from Manchester in 2002 stood, as did Davies's own Australian record of 14:31.45.
Davies said afterwards: "Having Jess on your shoulder with 100m to go is scary." Hull, who had won the London Diamond League 3000 m from Davies twelve days earlier, praised her composure, then went to the mile heats the same evening, where she was second in her heat in 4:34.20 behind Abbey Caldwell. Claudia Hollingsworth won the other heat in 4:31.17, a Games record for the women's mile.
Two titles in four days, the second of them by half a second over a teammate who had beaten her the last time they raced. That is a championship.
