Habtom Samuel runs 30:53 at Falmouth, the first sub-31 in the race's 54 years
The Eritrean took 15 seconds off a record that had stood since 2004; Pamela Kosgei beat Jess McClain in a photo finish, both timed in 35:25.

The old record of 31:08 was set by Gilbert Okari in 2004 and equalled by Wesley Kiptoo in 2023. Samuel took 15 seconds off it, averaging about 4:25 a mile.
Edwin Kurgat of Kenya was second in 31:04, also inside the old mark. Zouhair Talbi was third in 31:17 and Conner Mantz fourth in 31:19, and both went under the fastest time an American had ever run here, Alberto Salazar's 31:53.3 from 1982. Kiptoo was fifth in 32:00.
The women's race came down to the last downhill. The lead group ran close to five-minute miles from early on and was down to three by 10 km. Jess McClain pulled away on the final descent, Pamela Kosgei of Kenya answered, and the two were given the same time, 35:25, with Kosgei the winner on the photo. McClain's time is an American course record by 39 seconds; Everlyn Kemboi was third in 35:34 and Emma Grace Hurley fourth in 35:36. Tatyana McFadden won a record eighth women's wheelchair title.
Twenty-two years for 15 seconds. Then two people arrive together and the clock cannot separate them. Both things are what a record looks like.
