Karsten Warholm's 45.94 from the Tokyo Olympic final in 2021 had stood for five years; Warholm was second here in 46.69. Dos Santos had run 46.43 in Chorzów four days earlier. "I just broke the world record," he said at the line, which was all there was to say.
Less than 40 minutes later Masai Russell ran 12.09 in the 100 m hurdles, taking 0.03 off Tobi Amusan's record from the 2022 World Championships in Eugene. Amusan was second in 12.23 and Nadine Visser third in 12.34. Two world records in one Diamond League meeting, on a Thursday in Zurich.
The distance races were not far behind. Parker Wolfe won the 3000 m in 7:27.43, five seconds under Said Aouita's meeting record from 1986, with Graham Blanks 7:27.92 and Cameron Myers 7:27.97 and seven men under 7:30. Cole Hocker won the 1500 m in 3:31.71 from Phanuel Koech, with Jakob Ingebrigtsen fifth in 3:32.16. Emmanuel Wanyonyi ran a world-leading 1:41.76 over 800 m with Djamel Sedjati 1:41.83 behind him, and Faith Cherotich beat Doris Lemngole by 0.12 in the steeplechase, 8:55.82. Audrey Werro's 1:53.70 in the women's 800 m is its own story. Mondo Duplantis cleared 6.25 m and missed at 6.32.
Two world records, seven men under 7:30 and a 1:53 in the women's 800 m. Some nights the whole sport turns up at once.
