Djamel Sedjati was nearly a second back and France's Yanis Meziane took third in a lifetime best of 1:42.87. It was the first night of the 50th Allianz Memorial Van Damme.
The 1500 m went to the sprint. Cameron Myers, 20, won by four hundredths from Phanuel Koech, who is a year younger, with Ethan Strand third. Jakob Ingebrigtsen led the field into the home straight, was swallowed by the pack and finished fifth. Faith Cherotich was clear of Doris Lemngole and Winfred Yavi down the straight in the steeplechase, a meeting record of 8:51.61. In the women's 5000 m Freweyni Hailu's late burst gave Ethiopia the first three places, 14:35.20 ahead of Likina Amebaw and Senayet Getachew.
The night's fastest run was one lap. Collen Kebinatshipi of Botswana, 22, won the 400 m in 43.40, his third Diamond League record of the season after Paris and Monaco, and joint fifth on the all-time list. Jereem Richards was second in a Trinidad and Tobago record of 43.68. Chase Jackson threw a Diamond League record of 21.14 m in the shot. Mondo Duplantis withdrew moments before the start with a tight leg, and Emmanouil Karalis cleared 6.12 m for a meeting record in his absence.
A 1:41.80 that is now routine, and a 1500 m decided by less than a stride. The middle distances had a good Friday.
