Aidan Troutner and Emily Venters won the 2026 USATF 10 km Championships in Minneapolis-St. Paul on Saturday, and both broke the meet record in the process.

Troutner, a former BYU runner from Provo, Utah, ran 27:40 to take the men's title. That erased a championship record held by Dirk Lakeman since 1986. He did not win by much. Dillon Maggard was second in 27:41 and Ryan Ford third in 27:42, and USATF said the top six men crossed the line within five seconds of each other. Troutner called the pace relentless and said he was lucky to come away with the win.

Venters, who lives in Salt Lake City, controlled the women's race from early on and finished in 31:09. That broke the previous championship record of 31:40, set by Jess McClain in 2024, and left Venters within 13 seconds of the women's-only American record for the distance. Kassie Parker was second in 31:57 and Allie Ostrander third in 32:02, with Venters nearly a minute clear of Parker by the finish.

The race served as a USATF national championship rather than an open road race, so the fast times came from a stacked field racing for a title, not just prize money. Troutner's win is notable on its own: a 40-year-old championship record is the kind of number that outlasts entire eras of American distance running, and Saturday it finally went.

A 10K title race decided by one second at the front, and a record that stood since Reagan's first term. Championship 10Ks don't always deliver like that.
