Diriba breaks the Amsterdam course record in the rain, Berhanu misses his by three seconds

Ethiopia won both races at the Amsterdam Marathon on Sunday, October 18, and the rain did not stop either winner from going after a record.

Buze Diriba took the women's race in 2:16:10, breaking the course record of 2:16:52 that Yalemzerf Yehualaw set in 2024. Last year's winner, Aynalem Desta, was second in 2:17:06, and Meseret Belete made it an Ethiopian top three in 2:18:06. Marathon Handbook lists Diriba at 2:16:12; the official result will settle the two seconds, and either way the record fell by about 40.

Lemi Berhanu won the men's race in 2:03:33, three seconds outside the 2:03:30 Geofry Kipchumba ran here last year. Nicholas Kipkorir of Kenya was six seconds back in 2:03:39 and his countryman Patrick Mosin was third in 2:03:58. The whole published top ten finished under 2:06.

Noah Schutte was the first Dutch man, 25th in 2:09:35, and Mikky Keetels the first Dutch woman, 14th in 2:30:36.

Wet and cold, and still the fastest women's time ever run in Amsterdam. Flat courses forgive a lot.
