Mageean, from Portaferry in County Down, was the second Irish athlete after Sonia O'Sullivan to win an individual European title, taking the 1500m at the 2024 Rome European Championships. She completed a full set of European medals over the distance: bronze in 2016, silver in 2022 and the 2024 gold, plus an indoor bronze in 2019. She finished fourth at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest and won Commonwealth Games silver for Northern Ireland in 2022. She ran at two Olympics, Rio and Tokyo, and was ruled out of Paris 2024 by an Achilles injury. She held Irish records at 800m, 1500m and the mile.
World Athletics president Sebastian Coe said he learned of her death "with great sadness." Athletics Ireland called her "a much-loved and inspirational figure," and the Olympic Federation of Ireland's Peter Sherrard said "the country has lost a hero." Fellow athletes including Jessica Hull, Eilish McColgan and Jake Wightman posted tributes.
She had married her long-term partner shortly before her death.
Mageean spent nearly two decades racing for Ireland, from junior silver medals as a teenager to a European title years later. A career built on patience, through injuries that would have ended most, deserves to be remembered for the running, not the ending.
